Our little Tiger

May 6, 2008

Let me begin by saying how proud we are of our little tiger Wakeland.  He’s been playing baseball in the Frisco Miracle League and is on the Tigers team.  I tease him every week before the game by asking him if he plays for the kitty’s and meowing.   He responds with a loud growl, shows me his teeth and raises his hand as if its his paw with claws extended and swats at me a few times.  I think it gets him a little pumped up for the game and it definitely is a fun and humors moment for us.

This past Saturday there were several of the Frisco Rough Riders at the games and their mascots Deuce and Daisy were also there.  It was really fun for the kids and they absolutely loved the high fives and seeing Deuce and Daisy.  I even got a little pat on the top of the head from Daisy and it made a little squeak when she did it.  Funny!  It was just a great atmosphere and opportunity for the kids.

I am so impressed with the kids who participate in this league.  I actually heard there were around 95 kids signed up this season and my sons team has 13 kids playing on it.  It’s encouraging that so many families are taking the opportunity to get their kids outside and involved.  It’s also a little heart breaking that there are so many kids with special needs and I’m sure these 95 represent a very small percentage of the actual numbers in our area.

If you’ve not seen a Miracle League game, I encourage you to find one in your area.  If you live in North Texas, feel free to come out and watch my son play.  It’s a blast to see how hard these kids try to hit the ball, run the bases, make a play, and have fun!  There are smiles all over the field and they will certainly brighten your day.  Who knows, you might even be encouraged to move beyond your comfort zone and get involved as a Mircale League Buddy.  The kids need your help and would love for you to pay attention and show interest in their lives.  And those of us who are parents certainly appreciate the break!

Pregame play ground excursion.  (Missed our opportunity to take pictures with Deuce, but had fun exploring the playground!)  I think the hat with the long hair out the back makes Wakeland look like a real Big League ball player.

This is Daisy being asked out on a date by one of the Rough Riders players.  At least that’s how it looked to me standing behind the fence. :)

Wakeland going up to bat.  One thing you can tell from the picture (crop job) is he’s lined up facing the catcher and actually hit the ball off the tee towards the backstop the first time.  I’ve got some back yard coaching to do, however, I can understand how he got a little confused.  Wakeland is a lefty when he throws, but I think he might bat right handed, which means it probably feels uncomfortable for him to stand on the left side of the plate, which is where I’ve been coaching him to stand.

Wake really liked this guy.  He was the pitcher and Wakeland is definitely an “up front” kind of kid, so I’m sure that’s why he wanted to be like this guy!
