Story Time

July 2, 2008

My wife and I are getting a little lonesome in our house.  It’s been quiet for long enough and I think we’ve had enough rest.  We’re ready for our little “Buddy” and “Baby” to come home.  Our son is my buddy and Joanna’s baby, but I think what we’re going to get is a grown up little boy.  He turned nine the weekend we dropped him off and grandma and grandpa’s house and he’ll be coming home on Thursday, 18 days later, and we can’t wait to see him.

Last night we were talking with him on the phone and he’s sounding so grown up.  Our conversations with him have been really good and his speech and use of complete sentences have been exceptional.  It has been really fun hearing the stories about what he’s been up to at his Nana and Papa’s house.  Last night my wife was quizzing him and I could hear him say, “I went to play golf today.”  My dad has been taking him along when he goes to play golf, which I think is pretty cool.  Wakeland must be having a ball.

He also told me last night about picking green beans and eating them out of the garden, roasting marshmallows with the roasting fork I made in shop class when I was in highschool, and he was so excited to tell me about a picture he had of me when I was a little boy, with shaving cream all over his face.  I asked him if he was ready to get his own razor and start shaving, and he said “yes!”  Of course I’m talking about a play shaving kit like the one I got when I was his age.  It was so much fun!  I’m sure that’s what the picture is of.

I told him I was really missing him and that I was hungry for his ears.  Then he told me to eat mommy’s ears while he’s gone, and I told him hers weren’t nearly as good as his! :)   We enjoy wrestling with each other on the floor and I like to pretend bite on his ears.  When I told him I was going to eat on his ears as soon as he got home, he said he was going to work really hard to block my bites.  The play biting of the ears is something that has been passed down from my dad to me, and now me to my son.  It was fun and I laughed a lot.  I’m sure there will come a day when my son gets tired of me doing it, just like I did, but I’m hoping it’s many more years down the road.

I’m anxious to hear all the other stories about his trip to Nana & Papa’s house as I’m sure they are guaranteed to take me for a trip down memory lane!
