I’ve got a board meeting tonight that I need to prepare for, so I don’t have a lot of time to mess with my blog today. So, here’s a little something for you to check out.
If you love t-shirts, like I do, then check out Woot Shirt. I visit it nearly every day in search of the perfect shirt. The picture above is of today’s featured shirt and there will be a new one tomorrow. Check it early if you want a chance at the best shirts, as the quantities are limited and they sell out fast.
A couple of days ago it was mystery shirt day, so they just went through their warehouse and grabbed up all the miscellaneous shirts laying around and when someone ordered one, they would throw it in a bag and mail it to them, all for only $6.66.
Would you purchase a shirt that cost $6.66?
Mentoring
May 28, 2008
Today I’ll visit one of our schools and deliver the last 11 pair of shoes for this school year. We’ll top out at 211 pair, or as I like to say, lives helped. Our goal was 250 pair of shoes, so we’ll miss our mark by 39 pair, but I still feel a huge sense of accomplishment and like we’ve really worked hard this year.
Retread is starting to grow and I feel like it’s an organization that’s really beginning to take shape. In recent days I’ve been very encouraged by our Jubilee Kids Club and how we’ve started making an impact there. I know we are because of the smiles. I think a lot of times organizations feel they have to measure their growth or success in some way and if we measure the Jubilee Kids Club success by the number of smiles we see, then we’re really successful.
One of the other key parts of Retread is mentoring. We feel we are accomplishing our goals through the giving of shoes, but we want to be more than just a charity. We want to help reshape lives in positive ways and we want to build relationships with people who will team with us in reshaping lives all around the world. Today I hope to talk with one of our counselors about a lunch time mentoring program at their school. She and I have been dreaming for over a year about how we can mentor the kids at their school in this way, and her idea is very basic and simple and not a new concept by any means. There are tons of organizations out there already mentoring kids through lunch time mentoring programs. Even though there are other organizations already doing this, I don’t think it should keep Retread from also doing it. There’s a huge need out there for kids lives to be shaped in a positive way.
I think we all have the God given gift of service and it might look different for all of us. I also think we all have the ability to mentor someone. My path just happens to be headed in the direction of children, yours might be homeless people, alcoholics, drug addicts, single mothers, or those with special needs. Maybe you’re interested and would like to help mentor a young non-profit like Retread, we’d certainly appreciate your help and advice. Who or what ever it is, we all can reshape a life in a positive way. We just need to be willing to love, care, and give of ourselves in very simple and basic ways.
Today I’d love to hear about what you are doing to help reshape lives through mentoring. Leave me a comment and let me know what you are up to. I’d love to be encouraged by your acts of kindness and love today.
Bella
May 27, 2008
My wife and I watched a beautiful movie this weekend called Bella. I actually had the privilege of seeing Bella just over a year ago while I was at Q in Atlanta. We had a private screening of the movie before it had even been completely edited. I was deeply moved when I saw it at Q and have been excited about seeing it again.
Somehow I missed it when it showed in the theaters. I’m not sure why, especially since I had the insiders edge and was told far in advance when it would hit the theaters. I even watched for it, but somehow it slipped past me. I was disappointed, I didn’t have the opportunity to support this movie until now.
This weekend we were out running around and my wife noticed Bella in one of the new DVD rental machines at Walmart, so we hoped we would be able to rent it at Blockbuster and went and found it there. We went home and watched it and I was totally moved again by this beautiful expression of love.
I’m highly recommending you watch this movie. It is one of the best I’ve seen recently and one I’ll be purchasing for my collection of favorite movies.
I love this movie because it’s full of hope, love, grace, and second chances. I love the support, acceptance, and love shown by family. I love the fact they talk about abortion and adoption and show this difficult decision in a very different way, through love and patience and understanding. I love that I can identify and relate to the characters in the movie. Life is often hard and full of difficult circumstances and we are often faced with making tough decisions, but life can go on, there can be hope, and what ever choices or problems we’re faced with, it doesn’t have to be the end. This movie helps you see that it can actually be the beginning.
Make the decision today to rent this movie. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed and I hope you enjoy it as much as my wife and I enjoyed it.
